OUR VESSEL'S NAME

The USS Hunter was launched in February of 2011, and commissioned in November of that same year. Her original name was the USS Wisconsin, naming herself after the great U.S. Navy battleship. She retained that name for 11 years.

In January of 2023, Captain Eric J. Hildeman became the CO of the USS Wisconsin. He realized that there was another Star Trek Fan Club whose local chapter was also named the USS Wisconsin. To avoid confusion, and as an act of politeness toward fellow Star Trek fans, a name change was proposed. After taking a vote, the name USS Hunter was selected.

Officially, the Hunter is named after Orion the Hunter. Unofficially (because STARFLEET cannot name vessels after Paramount copyrighted ships, characters, or actors who portrayed them), the vessel's name was inspired by Jeffrey Hunter, the Milwaukee native who portrayed Captain Christopher Pike in the Star Trek TV Pilot episode, "The Cage."

MULTI-VECTOR ASSAULT MODE

The Prometheus is capable of splitting into three separate ships in order to attack a vessel from multiple angles at once. This is known as Multi-Vector Assault Mode, and Prometheus-class vessels are among the only vessels with enough automation to achieve this tactical advantage. The USS Hunter can also deploy heavy shuttlecraft and the Captain's Yacht to engage an enemy from even more angles.

Officially, these separate vessels are referred to as Hunter-Alpha, Hunter-Beta, and Hunter-Gamma. But our crew loves to personalize things, so the sections have nicknames. The dorsal (saucer) section is nicknamed the Laurel Clark, while the keel (bottom) section is nicknamed the James Lovell. Both Laurel Clark and James Lovell were NASA astronauts from Wisconsin. James Lovell orbited the moon twice, once on the infamous Apollo-13 mission in 1970. Laurel Clark died on board the Space Shuttle Challenger, along with her six crewmates, when it exploded upon re-entry in 2003. The ventral (middle) section remains the USS Hunter at all times.

THE CAPTAIN'S YACHT

The captain's yacht is a specialized heavy shuttlecraft, used for diplomatic and reconnaissance missions. It is similar to the Sovereign-class yacht known as the Cousteau, which docks with the Enterprise-E.

The name of the Captain's Yacht is the Alaimo. An alaimo is a variety of poplar tree (the Italian variation of Alamo) and this is the official source of the name. But the choice of name was inspired by Milwaukee native Marc Alaimo, who played Gul DuKat on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, along with many other beloved Star Trek characters.

The Captain's Yacht exists as a separate Facebook group on the Internet. While the USS Hunter's Facebook Group is private, posts on the Alaimo are visible to all, members or not. This allows the group to reach more potential members than it would otherwise, while simultaneously protecting the privacy of existing members.
